The Electoral Effects of Decentralization:
Evidence from Ukraine
In Ukraine, a country with young democratic institutions and an ambiguous political environment, the uncertainty of political alignments can motivate politicians to engage with informally operating networks of relatives, friends, and political allies. Using data on connections between 2,893 parliamentarians and 81,428 assistants, this study aims to describe and analyze the effects of informal networks on legislative misconduct in Ukraine.
